This segment starts and ends at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson, Maryville, TN.
The route is a mix of twisty paved roads, rough gravel roads, mountain climbing dirt/rocky surfaces, and smooth well-maintained gravel roads. The trip out of Maryville is some of the finest country roads in Tennessee, as well as a stop at the Greenback Castle, a local oddity. Next, you’ll want to remember Marble and Misty Roads for your next trip, two excellent roads. Soon a short trip along Route 360 gets your blood pumping, you may want to top off with gas at the Shell at the corner of 411 and 360. It will be a while before you see another gas stop. Next Citico Road runs along the Citico River which is a well-stocked trout stream. The Tennessee Trout Hatchery in Tellico Plains stocks the rivers each Thursday in season. Make sure to get the special daily trout stamp and bring your trout gear. There are rustic campsites all along Citico Creek, just call the Cherokee National Forest ranger to book. We take a little detour off of Citico Creek towards Far Gap on Cold Springs and Doublecamp Creek roads. Fasten your helmets tight, these roads will challenge your dirt riding skills, as the surface changes up and down the mountain. Citico Creek Rd ends at the Cherohala Skyway at the National Campground Indian Boundary. Stop at the campground and eat your lunch along the Lake. Take the Cherohala into North Carolina and turn on the dirt again at Old 81 (Big Santeetlah road) which is the original Cherohala Skyway that ends at the Joyce Kilmer Parkway. When you enter Joyce Kilmer Nature Preserve, you will make a 10-mile loop up to Maple Springs overlook, perhaps one of the most beautiful views of North Carolina mountains you can find, not to mention a challenging road. The views are great, sit, and enjoy for a while. From there you run through Joyce Kilmer to two of the best warm-up twisty roads you’ll find before the Dragon. Yellow Creek and Old Field Gap roads, none are better. Next passing by Tapoco Lodge and Deal’s Gap before going through the famous Dragon Tail. The turn-by-turn directions contain optional stops along the way.
Note: Drive times rely on road conditions, closures, and speed on dirt roads. Your drive time will vary based on these factors. Due to road closures, the map may be briefly changed, but the turn-by-turn instructions remain accurate.
